THE Association for Community and Dialogue welcomes the statement by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin that the government is reviewing compounds and penalties under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to curb rampant pollution by irresponsible quarters in Malaysia.Following increasing reports of water pollution in the country, Muhyiddin said the government was committed to ensuring that Malaysians get to enjoy a cleaner and healthier environment. While 2020 and the first movement-control order (MCO), which was implemented last year, provided some relief to the environment when Malaysians experienced clearer skies and cleaner air, Muhyiddin said this was not sufficient.“The challenges of the global lockdowns gave respite to the environment when industrial activities were reduced, but, at the same time, new norms had added a new set of environmental issues in the form of the indiscriminate disposal of face masks and the heavy use of plastic for takeaways.”He said the challenge now was to restore economic activities without reactivating environmental degradation. We are of the view that while the Prime Minister has shown concern for the environment there is an absence of an overall frame work in the corridors of power, the ministries, in business and among the rakyat on environmental ethics.According to environmental scholars on central issues in environmental ethics, adjusting the relationship between human and nature is one of the most fundamental issues facing nations in the global world. With the increasing deterioration of the ecological systems on which human beings rely, and the aggravation of the environmental crisis, human beings have realised that we cannot rely on economic and judicial methods alone to solve environmental pollution and ecological imbalances.Only with an appropriate attitude towards nature, and the establishment of a new ethical relationship between human beings and nature will we be able to love and respect it automatically, as well as conscientiously.Towards this end, it vital for the government, in consultation with all stake holders, to come up with a document on environmental ethics that would guide government policies on education, and all economic and social sectors, in moving the nation forward to meet sustainable development goals.Judicial or economic methods alone will not create a green Malaysia. – March 2, 2021.*Ronald Benjamin reads The Malaysian Insight. * This is the opinion of the writer or publication and does not necessarily represent the views of The Malaysian Insight.
